Dinner!

Little did we know when we arrived at the farm that there were new additions....
Oink!
Meet "Dinner"...she is the spotted pig!  Dan's nephew brought these two to the farm and is raising them.  The black one (not sure of his name!) is someone's 4H pig and "Dinner" is Dan's nephew's pig!  ;-)  These two crack me up.  I go out to feed them "slop" (any food item that is left over...vegetable peelings, the heel of the bread, etc) every day.  If I go empty handed (like when I want to take their picture), they are not too happy with me!  I'm not sure how something so ugly could taste so good (bacon!).  I don't think that "Dinner" will be ready for dinner before we leave the farm.  Shucks!

We've been quite busy since we have gotten here.  Friday night we went to watch the horses race with some of Dan's family.  It was my first time at the racetrack and I had a ton of fun even though I didn't bet.  I should have brought my camera but the weather was crummy and I left it at home. There are also slot machines in the casino too but we didn't stay long as it was sensory overload with all  of the lights and bells dinging.  We will be going back next week to see one of my favorite bands from the 80s....The Commodores.  Yep, I was a disco junkie back in the day and can't wait to hear "Brick House"!

Dan's been busy helping his Mom with some chores she needed taken care of around the farm.  We also had a leak in the RV that took about 2 days to fix.  It's been raining almost every day since we got here and although the leak appears to be fixed, we need it to rain to make sure. ;-) And, of course, now it is dry!

I have been helping Dan's Mom with her flower gardens.  Let's just say that I am in Heaven......

The Hummingbirds really like this garden!

The Foxgloves are gorgeous!

And here is the vegetable garden....

There are all types of yummy fruits and vegetables planted on the farm including rhubarb, chives, tomatos, and beans.  Of course, my favorite are the berries....blue, straw, black and rasp!  YUM!!  I can't wait for the berries to ripen so I can add that to the list of my work-camping duties.

One of the berry patches!
And two more pictures of different gardens...

Last night, we finally got a break in the rain so we got out the mule cart.

Notice that it is really only a single seat cart.  Well, on the way down to the river, we both shared the seat.  On the way back, I stood on the back of the cart the first half of the ride and then I got to drive so Dan got to stand.  We went zipping down to the flats....
until we made it to the Susquehanna River.  Some of the weeds we went thru must have been 5 feet tall.  At times you really couldn't see too far in front of you because the weeds were the same height as the mule!
Dan got out of the mule and went down to the river.  I stayed on the mule (standing of course so I could see!) just in case a bear decided to appear...
We are really looking forward to getting the kayak out and getting on the river.  I won't say we will paddle it as the current is such that we can just float!  Dan's Mom has offered to pick us up "down river". Now we just need a warm sunny day!

Back on the mule, we headed back to explore some more.

Way in the background you can see the silos and barn.  Here is an up close picture!
I really enjoy hearing Dan talk about growing up on the farm.  It's very interesting to me as I have never really been exposed to farm life.  So now I feel like I need to make up for lost time...even though it's not a working farm any more!

We rode on the mule up to the horse barn and started looking around...

When Dan rotary mows some of the farm, I really really want to ride with him and drive the tractor.  Now that is my idea of fun!

Those of you that know Dan well, know that he loves bikes!  Whether it's the Harley or pedal bikes, he likes them.  Check out this bike!

It's Dan's Schwinn from when he was a kid!  You can tell it got a lot of use back in the day!  We had a great time exploring.

Horse Barn on left; Home Sweet Home on the right!
Yep....I really like living on the farm!

Beautiful farm and that 4030 is a good tractor. That 4000 series put John Deere on the map- my mom sold a bunch of those :)

Although you say that it's not a "working" farm, some hard work must have taken place back in the day to make it so beautiful. The little piglets are precious and I can see that they adore you as much as you adore them. Not sure how you'd handle watching Dinner turn into breakfast though. On another note, I'm so happy for you going to see the Commodores - I wasn't even aware that they were still touring without Lionel Ritchie. Can't wait to hear all about it!

Boy what a GREAT place to grow up! You could probably put 3 of our farm on that land and gorgeous river frontage. This looks like a fabulous workcamping postion!! :-)

What a beautiful farm. I can see how Dan became such a MacGyver. He had lots to do growing up there. Looking forward for more reports from the farm.
